Thomas Edison State University is a public institution of higher learning residing in Trenton, New Jersey. It was established in 1972 as Edison College by the State of New Jersey. It was established as one of the first schools in the nation specifically designed for adult students. It was named after the famous inventor who gained knowledge outside of the traditional classroom. Its purpose was to provide alternative ways of gaining a college education. The first class included 70 students who received Associate in Arts degrees. In 1973, the name changed to Thomas A. Edison College and Thomas A. Edison State College in 1980. In 2015, the school officially received university status and changed the name to Thomas Edison State University. Today, Thomas Edison University is home to more than 18,000 students from all 50 states and 60 countries, and it uses the continuous-based academic calendar.
