Emergency Management Opportunities at National University

National University offers students two degree options in emergency management which include a Bachelor of Science in Homeland Security and Emergency Management or a Master of Science in Homeland Security and Emergency Management. Both programs are offered on campus and online, which means that students can complete their studies from virtually anywhere an internet connection exists. The degrees are housed within the university’s School of Professional Studies. The degree programs offer students the opportunity to conduct research in relevant areas, which may prepare graduates for work in many emergency preparedness and homeland security job environments. Students who choose the Bachelor of Science in Homeland Security & Emergency Management can transfer previously earned credits into the program to reduce their overall course requirements. Some of the elective courses available to students include Network Defense, Business Knowledge Management Strategy, Administrative Law for Business, and Conflict Negotiation for Leaders. To complete their undergraduate degree, students must undertake a supervised senior project, which will require completion of at least 27 quarter units in writing and research. The university expects students to spend around two months completing their senior project under the guidance of an instructor. Meanwhile, students who enroll in the graduate-level homeland security and emergency management program will learn topics suitable for management-level work in confronting natural disasters, national emergencies, emergency management, and homeland security.

Classes required in the Master of Science in Homeland Security and Emergency Management include Infrastructure Protection, Domestic Terrorism, and Policies of Homeland Security. Students may transfer up to 13.5 quarter units of previously-earned graduate credits into the program. While seeking their bachelor’s or graduate degree in emergency management, students may choose to become part of the Order of the Sword & Shield Honor Society, which is the national society for students studying intelligence, protective security, and homeland security.

Applicants without previous college experience will begin their application to National University by taking the ACCUPLACER mathematics and English evaluation, and those results will aid the university in its admission decision. First-time students with a GPA of more than 2.0 may enter the university as degree-seeking students, and applicants with a GPA of less than 2.0 will be admitted on a probationary level. Students interested in graduate study must have a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university or college and must have earned a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. Students with a GPA of less than 2.5 may also seek admittance as long as they provide evidence of a suitable score on one of the graduate standardized tests. Students can submit unofficial transcripts to get the application process started and must also complete the official application and an enrollment agreement.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Tuition for undergraduate students at National University is $370 per quarter unit and $1,665 for a 4.5 quarter unit course. Tuition for classes with a course level of 500 or above may require a different tuition cost based on the student’s degree program. Students may also need to cover several fees that include international student activity fees, transcript fees, and graduation processing fees. Programs with additional fees include the nursing program, the Master of Arts in Digital Journalism, and the Master of Fine Arts in Digital Cinema & Professional Screenwriting. Students may also pay lab fees for courses labeled as laboratory classes. Students at the graduate level will pay $430 per quarter unit or $1,935 for a 4.5 quarter unit course. Like undergraduate students, graduate students may also need to pay extra fees based on their program and enrollment status.
