Accelerated Emergency Management Degrees at MCNY

Since January 2014, the School for Public Affairs & Administration led by Prof. Humphrey Crookendale has offered a 60-credit, 16-month AA in Emergency Management and Business Continuity for Metropolitan College of New York undergrads to fulfill admission requirements to the NYPD or FDNY Academy. Chaired by Prof. Manuel Chea, the BA in Emergency Management and Business Continuity builds a 120-credit, 2.5-year curriculum that blends courses like Homeland Security or Macroeconomics with the Constructive Action project for IAEM certification. Online on Moodle or in Manhattan, the MPA in Emergency and Disaster Management follows a 36-credit, 12-month path advised by Prof. Obiano Huntley that requires one 10-day study abroad trip from Turkey to Chile. Majors might also secure FEMA internships, join Epsilon Pi Phi, attend the Urban Dialogue Series, and volunteer with the American Red Cross.

About the Metropolitan College of New York

Metropolitan College of New York originated in 1964 when activist Audrey C. Cohen started the Women’s Talent Corps to train low-income female students in 30-week career programs. In 1969, it expanded to two-year training and became coeducational. In 1970, New York State chartered it as the College for Human Services. Two years later, the College unveiled its “Purpose-Centered Education” plan. In 1983, the curriculum was broadened with business degrees. The next Spring, the College for Human Services earned initial regional accreditation. In 1988, the Master of Public Administration became the first graduate option. On May 1, 1992, the private, nonprofit institution was renamed Audrey Cohen College. In 2002, the Metropolitan College of New York name was formally adopted. In 2012, MCNY opened its high-tech Bronx Extension Center. In 2016, MCNY borrowed $68 million to relocate from Canal Street.

Metropolitan College of New York Accreditation Details

On June 27, 2019, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) voted to reaffirm the Level III accreditation status at the Metropolitan College of New York through another 2027-28 evaluation under the sixth president, Dr. Joanne Passaro, who earned City & State magazine’s Higher Education Power 50 Award. Located 96 miles down Interstate 95 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this superb six-state Northeast Region accreditor is authorized by the U.S. Education Department to review MCNY’s nine undergrad and seven master’s degrees. Further, Metropolitan College is registered by the New York State Board of Regents. The School for Public Affairs & Administration also belongs to the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration (NASPAA).

Metropolitan College of New York Application Requirements

Getting into the Metropolitan College of New York is classified “moderately difficult” by Peterson’s though 115 of the 126 Fall 2018 applicants were chosen for 91 percent acceptance. Prospective freshmen need to finish a high school diploma or GED certificate before the AA/BA in Emergency Management and Business Continuity. Following the NYS Regents curriculum or an out-of-state equivalent is preferred. Cumulative secondary GPAs of 2.5 and better are mandated. The Class of 2022 presented an average GPA of 3.11. First-year candidates need a minimum 18 ACT or 860 SAT composite score. SAT Critical Reading scores must be above 430. International students must verify English skills with at least 537 TOEFL pBT or 5.5 IELTS scores. Undergrad transfers are welcome with 12-90 credits graded C or greater from accredited institutions. The Advanced Standing Option necessitates 60+ credits and two years of work experience. School for Public Affairs & Administration post-grads need overall bachelor’s GPAs of 2.7 and better. MPA in Emergency and Disaster Management cohorts can skip GRE testing.

Metropolitan College of New York reviews students on a rolling basis for admission thrice each year. Recommended final deadlines are September 1st for Fall, January 1st for Spring, and May 1st for Summer enrollment. March 1st is the priority deadline for financial aid consideration. Tuition and Financial Aid

For 2019-20, the Metropolitan College of New York is billing AA/BA in Emergency Management and Business Continuity majors $793 per credit. Full-time undergrad tuition costs $9,489 by term. Associate and bachelor’s students cover a $425 college services fee each semester. The Virtual Lab fee adds $98 per course. MCNY budgets $9,600 yearly for off-campus living expenses. Students should reserve about $1,000 for books and $3,100 for miscellaneous each year. Annual undergrad attendance equals $33,154 independently or $23,554 with family.
