Eastern New Mexico University offers programs for students who currently work or want to work in emergency management positions. It offers a certificate of occupational training that helps students get jobs working for FEMA and other government agencies. They can also get credit for any FEMA training or experience they have and for any classes they took through that department. In addition to required classes, students can take emergency management electives such as Debris Management, Flood Fight Operations, Homeland Security Planning for Local Governments and Local Volunteer and Donations Management.
A Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences is available with two concentrations. The first is an emergency management concentration, which includes two years of general classes and two years of specialized classes. Students can also transfer two years of classes from a community college into either program and graduate in two additional years. The nine classes in this concentration include Community Risk Reduction for Fire and Emergency Services, Disaster Response, Disaster Recovery, Hazard Mitigation and Emergency Services Administration and Management. Students will also take a capstone in emergency management and two electives.
Students who choose the fire and emergency services concentration learn more about what fire departments do during an emergency situation. It features different courses, including Fire Prevention Organization and Management, Systems Management and Applications of Fire Research. The last course goes over the methods that investigators use as they look for the cause or source of a fire. Both programs ask students to take electives such as Homeland Security, Topics in Emergency Management or Public Health Emergencies.
Both the concentrations in this program are open to online students. Those who attend one of the university’s campuses though can gain practical experience. The university has an emergency management department that offers training and provides students and faculty with steps they can follow during a disaster or an active shooter situation. Students may have the chance to do volunteer work with that department too.
About Eastern New Mexico University
Eastern New Mexico University is a regional university that caters to students living near the state’s border with California. Founded by the state in 1927 as a normal school to provide local schools with qualified teachers, issues such as the Great Depression tied up funds. The school did not open until 1934, but it quickly became popular among students who wanted to earn their degrees and get educational training. Known as Eastern New Mexico Junior College up until 1940, it served as a community college and only offered two-year degree programs. It then became Eastern New Mexico College and expanded its curriculum to include four-year bachelor’s programs. This would eventually lead to the college adding graduate programs and becoming Eastern New Mexico University or ENMU.
ENMU now operates three campuses in New Mexico. The first is its flagship campus in Portales, which offers all the degree programs available and has a television studio where students can work. ENMU Ruidoso is a smaller campus that offers community college programs. There is a third campus in Roswell that sits on an old military base. This campus offers two-year programs and helps students transfer to the main campus or another university. Between all three campuses and all the programs now available across each level, Eastern New Mexico University has an enrollment of more than 6,000.
Eastern New Mexico University Accreditation Details
The nursing, speech and language pathology and education programs offered by Eastern New Mexico University all have accreditation from professional organizations. It has regional accreditation too, which comes from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and its north and central division. That accreditation is important because it is what lets students complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online and get aid for the coming school year. ENMU renews its regional accreditation on a 10-year schedule.
Eastern New Mexico University Application Requirements
Any student who is under the age of 25 is a first-time student, according to ENMU. They can submit their applications at any time because the university doesn’t have any deadlines. It does ask that students meet all requirements and provide all their documents and information at least a few weeks before they want to start classes. This gives ENMU time to process their applications. Students will need to submit the university application and a scholarship application and fill out the FAFSA. The university does not award financial aid to any student until it receives the FAFSA. Other requirements include an ACT or SAT score and official transcripts.
Those who earned any college credits while in high school will need to submit transcripts that come from those colleges or the education board. Students who are at least 17 years old can apply with a home school transcript too, but they will also need to submit a minimum ACT/SAT score of 17/810. ENMU has admissions counselors who can assist prospective students too. Those counselors can help them with both their applications and the FAFSA.
Tuition and Financial Aid
The estimated cost of attending ENMU is $3,103 per semester for New Mexico undergrads. Undergrads who come from other states pay this same amount plus a nonresident fee, which brings their costs to $4,064 per semester. Traditional students can also live on the ENMU campus. They pay $1,748 per semester for a room and $1,833 per semester for a meal plan. Part-time students pay $258 per credit hour as a New Mexico resident and $338 per credit hour as a nonresident. The university charges an additional fee of $17 per credit hour for all online classes.
Scholarships are available for emergency management majors and students majoring in other subjects at ENMU. New Mexico residents with a minimum GPA of 2.5 and a score of 20/940 on the ACT/SAT can qualify for a full-tuition scholarship that they can renew each year when they maintain the same GPA. Another scholarship provides residents with up to $5,100 a year in funding. Nonresidents can apply for university scholarships that provide them with similar amounts. Students should also use the FAFSA to receive funds from the government, including direct student loans, work-study, and grants. Eastern New Mexico University allows students to use multiple types of financial aid to pay for one of its emergency management degree programs.
