About Angelo State University

In 1923, the residents of San Angelo lost a bid to be selected as the home of Texas Technological College but that did not deter the community from rallying together to create their own school. In 1928, San Angelo Junior College opened its doors, funded by local donations and a county tax. The first year, 112 students enrolled. The following year, the stock market collapsed, plunging the country into the Great Depression. San Angelo continued to grow even during the difficult financial time, even dropping “junior” from their name to become San Angelo College.

During World War II, the college again struggled financially as students left for the war effort. They remained open and eventually outgrew the downtown location. Tax collections were not adequate enough to purchase land for a new campus, so once again, the community stepped up to help, raising $300,000 for the new campus.

After World War II, enrollment increased substantially as soldiers returned to take advantage of the GI Bill. In the 1960s, the school became a four-year institution and, in 1963, it became a state institution, joining the Texas State University System. In 2007, after a petition from the local community, Angelo State became part of the Texas Tech University System, becoming Angelo State University.

Today, Angelo State University offers more than 60 degree programs and has over 100 registered student organizations.
