Pathways to Emergency Management Careers at Drury

Since Fall 2016, the College of Continuing Professional Studies has granted a Bachelor of Science in Emergency Management for Drury University Panthers to develop crisis decision-making skills for leading public or private organizations through disaster situations. Chaired by Prof. Ryan Nicholls, the 124-credit, HLC-accredited curriculum introduces effective strategies for preparing resilient communities. Online on Moodle and in Springfield, undergrads take eight- or 16-week courses from Hazard Mitigation to Conflict Resolution with a 13:1 student-teacher ratio. For shorter study, students can select the 62-credit, transfer-friendly Associate of Science in Emergency Management headed by Prof. Ty Davisson. Majors might also receive the $500 Missouri EMA Scholarship, intern with the Department of Homeland Security, join Alpha Lambda Delta, and semester abroad in the Czech Republic.
About Drury University
Drury University originated in 1873 when Congregationalist minister Rev. Samuel Drury donated funds to create Springfield College for rigorous liberal arts instruction like Yale and Dartmouth. That September, President Morrison welcomed an inaugural coed class that included five women. In 1875, it became Drury College to honor the founder’s beloved late son. In 1898, Drury College purchased 40 acres in the “Birthplace of Route 66” for three permanent academic halls. In 1905, Drury received its famous Civil War cannon to adorn Burnham Hall. In 1909, it solidified its United Church of Christ covenant by founding the Drury School of Religion. In 1960, Drury College was notably featured on NBC’s The Ford Show. By January 1, 2000, the Drury University name was adopted to signify graduate-level education. In 2011, the State Department recognized Drury as a top Fulbright Scholar producer.
Endowed for $82.9 million, Drury University now educates 2,971 undergrad and 239 post-grad Panthers from 57 countries online, on the 88-acre Springfield campus, or at eight branches from Rolla to Fort Leonard Wood with 50+ clubs like the Volunteer Corps for 81 percent retention. In 2015, Drury received the Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree Campus USA Award. In 2019, Drury University won a CASE District II Circle of Excellence Award. Drury had a 2019 BKD Southwest Missouri Nonprofit Excellence Award recipient too. The U.S. News & World Report ranked Drury the 29th top Midwest school and 19th best for vets college. On Niche, Drury boasts America’s 79th best criminal justice program, 139th best athletics, and 301st smallest classes. The Princeton Review named Drury University eighth nationally for race/class interaction. College Factual applauded Drury for the 250th best law enforcement value.
Drury University Accreditation Details
On March 21, 2011, the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association (HLC-NCA) Institutional Actions Council voted favorably to reaffirm the Level III accreditation status at Drury University through another 2020-21 evaluation under the 18th president, Dr. James Timothy Cloyd, who earned the Jack Evans Regional Leadership Award. Located 509 miles north via Interstate 55 in Chicago, Illinois, this huge 19-state Heartland Region accreditor is authorized by the U.S. Education Department to review Drury’s 18 associate, 65 baccalaureate, and four master’s programs. Further, Drury University maintained approval by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International on May 31, 2016. The College of Continuing Professional Studies is also recognized by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Drury University Application Requirements
Enrollment at Drury University is classified “moderately difficult” by Peterson’s because only 1,149 of the 1,575 Fall 2018 applicants were chosen for competitive 73 percent acceptance. First-year Panthers hunting the Bachelor of Science in Emergency Management must culminate a high school diploma or GED certificate. The Class of 2022 presented a mean secondary GPA of 3.8. The middle 50th percentile had ACT scores of 23-28. Mid-range admitted SAT scores were 500-600 for Reading and 510-620 for Math. Minimum qualifying composite scores are 21 on the ACT and 980 on the SAT. Honors Program entrants should achieve 3.8 GPA, 28 ACT, 1300 SAT, or better marks. The College of Continuing Professional Studies makes transfers test-optional with 30+ non-remedial credits. Cumulative GPAs of 2.5 and higher are strongly encouraged. International students prove English ability with at least 530 TOEFL pBT, 6.0 IELTS, 500 SAT Reading, or 4.0 TWE scores.
Drury University has a rolling admission process that returns decisions in just two weeks. For financial aid consideration, the priority deadline is February 1st. Housing contracts and $200 deposits are due on February 15th. It’s also suggested that international students apply before July 15th for Fall or December 15th for Spring starts. Tuition and Financial Aid
For 2019-20, Drury University is charging traditional full-time undergrads $14,250 each semester or $28,500 annually. Part-time day courses incur $959 per credit. Summer school tuition drops to $262 per credit. Students cover the $250 technology fee, $325 service fee, and $95 health center fee each year. One-time orientation fees are $150. International student health insurance fees are $1,485 yearly. Living at the Springfield campus’ dorms like Sunderland Hall adds $2,555 to $3,955 for semester housing. Residential meal plans for Drury Dining Commons are $879 to $1,656 extra. Budgets should include $1,200 for books and $3,200 for miscellaneous. Annual undergrad attendance equals $40,951 on-site or $32,915 if commuting. Online Associate of Science or Bachelor of Science in Emergency Management courses are $320 per credit. Distance students pay a $31 service fee and $7 technology fee per credit.
According to the NCES College Navigator, the Financial Aid Office on Bay Hall’s 2nd Floor links 97 percent of full-time Drury Panthers to median tuition assistance of $17,711 apiece for $24.47 million combined. University funds include the Meador Center Community Engagement Scholarship, Debate Activity Award, Diversity Scholars Award, Silver Legacy Scholarship, Pre-Law Scholarship, International Baccalaureate Scholarship, Ronald Neville Service Scholarship, Archie & Marion Russell Scholarship, Study Abroad Scholarship, and Alpha Phi Scholarship. The $1,000 Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship has a July 15th deadline for community college transfers with 30+ credits and GPAs above 3.5. The Presidential Scholarship gifts $13,000 annually for exemplary freshmen exceeding the 29 ACT or 1300 SAT score minimum. Federal resources, such as the Pell Grant or Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant, require FAFSA applications coded 002461. Missourians could also claim the Access Missouri Grant, Bright Flight Scholarship, Kids Chance Scholarship, Marguerite Ross Barnett Scholarship, Horatio Alger Scholarship, Public Safety Officer Grant, and more.
