The State University of New York at Canton is one of the colleges in the State University of New York school system. St. Lawrence University originally opened a small college in Canton called the School of Agriculture in 1906. It was the first post-secondary institution in the state to receive approval from the state itself. As a two-year college, it functioned more as a junior college than a traditional university, but that would change it later years when the school became the New York Agricultural and Technical Institute. ATI, as it was known at the time, joined the SUNY system in the 1960s. As its curriculum changed, the system decided to change the college’s name to the State University of New York Agricultural and Technical College at Canton. It did not become the State University of New York at Canton until the late 1980s.
Also called SUNY Canton today, the university still offers some of the same programs it did during its junior college days. Students can complete a two-year program and earn an associate degree, but they can also earn certificates from the university. Some of those certificate programs complement and supplement its degree programs too. It also offers other programs with select colleges in the area that ask students to take one to two years of classes on one campus and then up to two years at another campus. With an enrollment of around 3,600 students, SUNY Canton is one of the smallest schools in the SUNY system.
