Durham Technical Community College offers an Associate in Emergency Management, Associate in Emergency Medical Science, and an Emergency Management-Business Continuity Certificate.
The Associate in Emergency Management is intended to provide students with a strong technical foundation with professional know-how for emergency services jobs in various organizations. Students learn about the technical and management aspects of law enforcement, emergency medical services, fire protection, and emergency planning. Students engage in classroom and laboratory exercises to provide an overview of emergency preparedness, protection, and enforcement. A total of 67 semester hours are needed to complete the degree program. Students can complete the program is 18 months and all courses are offered online. The core courses include Emergency Management, Incident Management, Mitigation and Preparedness, Sociology of Disaster, Terrorism and Emergency Management, Emergency Planning, Response and Recovery, and Emergency Operations Center Management.
The Associate in Emergency Medical Science program provides students with the knowledge and abilities to provide advanced emergency medical care. Students gain complex understanding, competency, and experience using evidence-based practice. Graduates of the program are prepared to take state and national certification examinations. A minimum of 66 semester hours is needed for completion of the degree. The program is available at the Orange County Campus and students can complete it in 18 months. The core courses include Emergency Medical Technician, EMS Clinical Practicum, Advanced Airway Management, Cardiology, Medical Emergencies, Trauma Emergencies, Life Span Emergencies, and EMS Capstone.
The Emergency Management-Business Continuity Certificate provides instruction on technical and management aspects of emergency related services. Students participate in classroom and laboratory components and they learn various concepts, including investigative principles, hazardous materials, codes, standards, finance, and emergency agency operations. A total of 15 semester hours are needed for completion of the certificate program. The courses include Emergency Management, Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment, Emergency Planning, Business Continuity, and Emergency Operations Center Management.

Durham Technical Community College is a public, comprehensive two-year postsecondary school located in Durham, North Carolina. It is a charter member of the North Carolina Community College System. The college was established in 1961 as Durham Industrial Education Center. It continued to operate as this entity until 1965 when it was changed to Durham Technical Institute. In 1986, the school was granted approval to add a university transfer program. It also changed its name again to Durham Technical Community College in 1986. Today, Durham Technical Community College is home to more than 5,600 students on its main campus. It also has seven regional campuses throughout the area, serving over 18,000 students. Durham Technical Community College offers more than 100 degrees, diplomas, and certificate programs. Students are also able to begin the first two years of a four-year degree and follow a transfer plan to a four-year institution.
