Established in the 1960s, Oakland Community College is a large institution with over 80,000 students attending various semesters during the year. A community college located in Livonia, Schoolcraft College has around 13,000 students attending classes. The school was established in 1961 and was called Northwest Wayne County Community College, but school administrators felt that the name of the school was too long, so they changed it to make it shorter. The school was then named after a geologist named Henry Schoolcraft. The school has developed renowned programs in a few different areas including culinary arts, and also has a respected continuing education program that’s great for students who want to update their . The Homeland Security program at Schoolcraft features classes that may transfer to 4-year colleges for study toward a degree in homeland security. A college associated with the Roman Catholic Church, the school was founded almost 100 years ago in 1919. The school was originally called St. Joseph’s College for Women and the group of Catholics who founded the school was called the Adrian Dominican Sisters. The college became a coeducational facility in 1969 and became known as its current name in 1998. The school has around 2,200 undergraduates and just under 400 graduate students. A variety of programs are offered by the school in more than 40 different academic areas, which are divided into six different academic divisions. The college also offers a variety of classes for high school students who are interested in attending advanced courses before getting a high school diploma.
Homeland Security & Emergency Management Leadership M.A.
As a program designed for students who already have experience in the workforce, the MA in Homeland Security enrolls many students who have experience working as fire fighters, emergency response personnel, and various first-responders for emergency situations. Some of the classes required of the program include Disaster and Emergency Management: Response & Mitigation and Critical Infrastructure: Vulnerability Analysis and Protection. The college is a charter member of the Center for Homeland Defense and Security, and is one of the best examples of experiential learning and state-of-the-art resources in an educational environment. Students must complete a total of 36 credits to finish the program. Teachers in the program have been practitioners of security in the field with instruction coming from professionals in areas like homeland security, emergency preparedness, and work at the local, state, and federal level.
