College of Liberal Arts and Sciences – Department of Public Policy

Ranked as the 19th best public university by U.S. News and World Report, the University of Connecticut (Uconn) has more than 30,000 current students attending the university’s 14 schools and colleges that offer seven undergraduate degrees in more than 100 majors, and awards 17 graduate degrees in 86 fields of study.Uconn’s Greater Hartford facilities are situated on an exquisitely kept 58-acre campus in West Hartford. Located near the State Capitol and legislative offices, the Greater Hartford campus hosts the University’s Department of Public Policy, which offers a Master of Arts in Public Administration.

Master of Public Administration (MPA)

Serving as a principal educational experience in the area of public policy management, the Master of Public Administration (MPA) is designed to deliver problem oriented courses for aspiring public managers and policy makers. The program successfully trains students on how to diagnose problems, analyze information, plan, communicate, and implement change. Students are required to complete 48 credits in the MPA program, which consists of 24 core credits, 12 focus area credits, six internship credits, and six capstone credits. Dual degree options are also available, such as a structured joint MPA/MA in economics. In addition, students have simultaneously pursued degrees with Law (JD), Structured Studies (MA), Public Health (MPH), and Social work (MSW), among other studies. Graduates of the program typically seek careers as emergency managers, directors, supervisors, coordinators, instructors, and experts in the local, state and federal government, as well as private and non-profit organizations.

Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences

Ranked as on the 100th best university in northeastern United States by U.S. News and World Report, the University of New Haven (UNH) has more than 6,000 current students, 33% of which are enrolled in arts and sciences, 21% in business, 12% in engineering, and 34% in criminal justice and forensic sciences.The Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences provides renowned degree programs for those on career paths in national security, law enforcement, corrections, forensic sciences, and related areas. The college consists of a crime scene center, crisis management center, museum, laboratories, classrooms, and a 104-seat lecture hall. In particular, the college offers two national security programs at the B.S. and M.S. level.

National Security Studies, B.S.

The Bachelor of Science in National Security Studies program offered by UNH is designed to equip students with skills needed to become a member of the national security infrastructure of the United States. In contrast to Homeland Security, which focuses on domestic threats exclusively, those who work in National Security will deal with external threats to the county and maintain its international interests. The program successfully trains students on how to collect external communications, analyze threats of intrusions or attacks, and maintain the integrity of U.S. information systems. Graduates of the program typically begin working for the CIA, the FBI, the NSA, the DIA, the Department of State, and the Department of Defense.

National Security Studies, M.S.

The Master of Science program in National Security offered by UNH is designed to let students benefit by learning from experienced practitioners who have worked for the FBI, CIA, Connecticut State Police, UN, and other security agencies.The program requires students to successfully complete an internship, research report, or thesis prior to graduation. As a common concentration, Information Protection and Security is designed to teach students how to combat cyber attacks on information systems. To graduate the Master of Science program in National Security, students are required to complete 36 credits, which consists of 15 core credits, nine restricted elective credits, and 12 approved general elective credits. Graduates of the program typically begin working for the CIA, the FBI, the NSA, the DIA, the Department of State, and the Department of Defense.
