Anyone who ever watched a spy movie or a political thriller might wonder what they need to do to become a Secret Service agent. Though many think that the Secret Service is only responsible for protecting the president and other politicians or government officials, this department is also responsible for stopping criminals from making and passing counterfeit money. Though you may never find yourself working as a bodyguard for a politician, you may find yourself investigating crimes involving counterfeiting criminals. Before you can gain employment, you need to know the requirements of the job and how you can become an agent.
Basic Requirements
According to the United States Secret Service, only applicants who are an American citizen can become a Secret Service agent. All applicants must fall within the age requirements, which ranges from 21 to 37. Keep in mind that you must be at least 21 and no older than 37 when you accept the job. All agents must also have good vision and be in good physical shape. Those who wear corrective glasses or contact lenses and cannot have their vision corrected cannot work as an agent.
Pass the Tests
After meeting the basic requirements, you must go through a series of tests. One of the first tests is a physical examination. You’ll meet with a doctor and perform a series of exercises and other movements to track your strength. The doctor will also check your blood pressure, cholesterol and other tests to ensure you can handle the job. The U.S. Secret Service also requires that applicants take and pass the Treasury Enforcement Agent. If you pass that test, you can then take the psychological and criminal background check. Before working, you must also successfully pass an in-depth drug test. You must pass a drug test and other tests to gain the clearance necessary to work for the Secret Service.
Have the Right College
Many government jobs are only open to those with some type of college degree. Though you may work for the Secret Service without a degree, you’ll need to demonstrate knowledge in research and investigative techniques. This might require that you spend some time working as a police officer or a private investigator or that you have a military background. If you have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four year college and a high grade point average, you might start out at a higher grade and earn more than other incoming agents make.
Attend the Interviews
To become a Secret Service agent, you must also pass several interviews. These interviews will take place in a closed location with several agents asking the questions and judging your responses. The first interview might ask you about your background, education and experience. If you make it beyond the first round of interviews, the questions will become more in-depth. The Secret Service may also ask that you take a polygraph test as part of the interview process.
